About Us

What is the New York Organ Donor Network?
The New York Organ Donor Network is the second largest of the nation’s 58 nonprofit, federally designated organ procurement organizations. Founded in 1978, we are now entering our fourth decade of saving lives

What does the Donor Network do?
We are responsible for the recovery of organs, eyes and tissues for transplantation, and public and professional education efforts in the greater New York metropolitan area.

What region does the Donor Network serve?
The Donor Network’s region covers a highly diverse population of 13 million in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island, Long Island, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester, and Pike County, PA.

Does the Donor Network work in conjunction with partners?
Yes, the Donor Network partners with 10 transplant centers, more than 100 hospitals, as well as several eye and tissue banks. We also collaborate with transplant support groups, workplace partners and many community and religious organizations.

So how does the donation process work?
By law, hospitals are required to notify the New York Organ Donor Network of all in-hospital deaths or imminent deaths. When donation is medically possible, our highly trained staff members check to see if the individual enrolled in the New York State Donate Life Registry, a confidential database administered by New York State’s Department of Health that lists New Yorkers whose decision to consent to donation is legally binding. If there is no prior documentation, our staff obtains authorization from next of kin. They work closely with hospital personnel to recover suitable organs, eyes and tissues. We also offer follow-up care and support to all donor families.

Is the Donor Network affiliated with other organizations?
Yes, the Donor Network is fully accredited by the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO). It is a member of the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS).
